Natural Progesterone versus Brand Name Synthetic Progestins

Natural progesterone is identical to the progesterone your own body makes

Your body makes three kinds of natural estrogen - estradiol, estrone, and estriol.  Your body make one kind of natural progesterone - progesterone.  The problem is that these natural bioidentical hormones have been known since the 1950’s and are found in nature and cannot be patented.  If they cannot be patented, then there are many competitors, and the price of progesterone therapy goes down.  For the enterprising businessman is a poor business model.  Declining prices, shrinking profit margins, and many competitors does not make for a good business.

So what’s the solution?  Chemically modify the natural hormone and patent it, so only you can make it and sell it to the public.  Then give a slick name, slick advertising on the TV, and send out drug representatives to the medical doctors.  This is a good business solution.

However, the problem is that the hormone is chemically modified and although it kind of fits into the hormone receptor, it stimulates the receptor weirdly.  In many cases, chemically modified progesterones known as progestins actually increase breast cancer   rates.  In a 1993 Physician Desk Reference, one such progestin is actually documented as causing an increased incidence breast tumors in beagle dogs.

In contrast, women exposed to high levels of bioidentical natural progesterone for a long time have a lower incidence of breast cancer and endometrial cancer.  “Pro” means “for”.  “Gesterone” means “gestation”.  So pregnant women have high levels of progesterone throughout their entire pregnancy.  They start off with their corpus luteum making 20-40 mg/day of progesterone.  The progesterone continues to ramp up so that during 1 day of third trimester pregnancy, she is producing 400 mg/day of progesterone.

Women that are pregnant for many times have high levels of progesterone for 9 months for each pregnancy.  These women have a smaller chance of breast cancer and endometrial cancer.  Progesterone discourages these two cancers.  
Progesterone tells the breast cells to differentiate and become an adult and slow down.  This is the very antithesis of cancer.  Estradiol in contrast tells the cells to reproduce replicate and proliferate.  This is congruent with cancer.

John Lee, MD the father of the renaissance of the use of natural bioidentical progesterone quoted a small research study in Taiwan.  There were 30 women with breast lumps.  They were biopsied before and after several weeks with treatment with natural hormones.  10 women took estradiol.  10 women took estradiol and progesterone. 10 women took progesterone alone.  On lumpectomy, the 10 women that took estradiol alone showed proliferation in the lump.  The 10 women that took progesterone alone showed differentiation, proliferation arrested.  The 10 women that took estradiol and progesterone together for those concentrations showed differentiation not proliferation.

Natural progesterone is used routinely by fertility Medical Doctors (the test tube guys) to prevent miscarriage.  Progesterone does NOT cause birth defects.  Brand name synthetic progestins, in contrast, causes birth defects according to their own product literature.  

Natural progesterone is fine to use during pregnancy (make sure you consult a medical doctor to use progesteorne in pregnancy).
